Abstract

The Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) holds a large number and historically valuable specimens of insects that were collected from various parts of the country before and after the independence of the Indo-Pak subcontinent (1917–2024). In this study, we examined 605 specimens of dung beetles of subfamily Scarabaeinae Latreille, 1802, and identified 26 species belonging to 12 genera and seven tribes. The tribes consist of Coprini Kolbe, 1805 (nine species), Onthophagini Lacordaire, 1856 (six species), Onitini Laporte, 1840 (six species), Gymnopleurini Lacordaire, 1856 (two species), Oniticellini d´Orbigny, 1916 (one species), Scarabaeini Latreille, 1802 (one species), and Sisyphini Mulsant, 1842 (one species). This study adds one species to the scarabid fauna of Pakistan, Onthophagus (Palaeonthophagus) conspersus Reitter, 1893.

Abstract

Effect of methanolic leaf extract of Moringa oleifera for the stabilization of butter oil with modified fatty acid profile at ambient temperature was investigated. Twelve Sahiwal cows of first and early lactation were randomly stratified into two groups in a completely randomized design and fatty acid profile of milk fat was modified by feeding 300 grams calcium salts of fatty acids (per cow per day) to one group (G-1) and the second group was not fed on calcium salts of fatty acids (G-2). Concentration of long chain fatty acids (C18:1 to C18:3) in milk of G-1 was increased from 30.33±0.174b to 35.36±0.14a% as compared to G-2. Milk fat of G-1 was turned into butter oil. Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MOLE) was incorporated into butter oil (from milk of G-1) at three different concentrations: T1= 400, T2= 600, and T3= 800 ppm. All these treatments were compared with a control, without any addition of MOLE. Peroxide value of T2 in Schaal oven test (after 90 days of storage) was 5.35±0.29b as compared to control 16.64±0.42a (meq /kg). p-anisidine value and induction time (after 90 days of storage at ambient temperature) of T2 and control were 12.45±0.63b, 28.67±1.36a (meq kg-1) and 10.84±0.28a and 3.95±0.14b hours, respectively. It was concluded that Moringa oleifera leaf extract at 600 ppm concentration may be used for the enhancement of oxidative stability of butter oil with modified fatty acid profile at ambient temperature.

Abstract

The novel, with the tools of language, represents the real world, so the word takes the place of lens, revealing different  aspects of society. The study of the narrative text in its cultural, social, political and historical format and its role in the formation of cultural identity for society helps to search about the emplicit pattern behind the apparent text and its technical esthetics. The purpose of this study with an analytical and descriptive approach and based on critical approaches for cultural criticism and its procedures by focusing on the parallel cultural pattrens behind the linguistic construction of the text in the novel "The Country Night" by Janan Jassim Hallway is presenting a perception about cultural patterns in their aesthetic and ugly dimensions. A esthetics lead to cultural awareness, but the ugliness are the systemic defects hidden under the mantle of the aesthetic as one of the cultural tricks that lead to cultural blindness. The obvious cultural habits of the war discourse in this novel are the dignity, honor, and defense of the eastern front of the Arab world, as opposed to the harsh and hidden cultural practices of the regime. The fictional character (Abdullah), like any Iraqian, feels no identity in his life in front of repressive behavior. Even the place in the story changes from a happy place (a place for children to play) to a sad place (a place of execution) to shows the dominance of cultural practices created by state violence in Iraqian society.
