Abstract
The present list is based on all available published literatures on taxonomy and biodiversity of the thrips fauna of China (including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) up to July 2024. The known Chinese Thysanoptera fauna currently consists of 816 species in 206 genera, including 443 species in the suborder Terebrantia and 373 species in the suborder Tubulifera. In addition, the family Stenurothripidae Bagnall has been added to the fauna of China. In the past 10 years, many additional taxa have been newly recorded or described for China, that is includes about 12.6% of all species of thrips in the world. Amongst Chinese taxa, the family Thripidae is the most diverse, with 412 species, and within this family, the richest genera are Thrips, Stenchaetothrips, Mycterothrips and Trichromothrips, respectively. Totally, the most species have been recorded from Taiwan, with 292 records, followed by Yunnan, with 273 records, and Guangdong, with 237 records.

INTRODUCTION

Thysanoptera (commonly known as thrips) are fringe winged, slenderer bodied insects with asymmetrical mouthparts (Mound & Marullo, 1996). They are usually small in size (~0.5-15 mm), and inhabit in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions (Lewis, 1997). Thysanoptera is a diverse order, comprising 6,458 species in 788 extant genera, of which 187 species in 70 genera are fossils; the order is organized into two suborders and fifteen families (including fossils) (ThripsWiki, 2023). The latest checklist of Thysanoptera in China was published by Mirab-balou et al. (2011a), including 566 species in 155 genera. Since then, several papers (about 130 publications) have appeared on the taxonomy and faunistic studies of thrips in China. These studies have resulted in a substantial increase in the number of species known from China, totalling 816 species in 206 genera belonging to six families, adding 250 species and 51 genera comparing the last published checklist from China by Mirab-balou et al. (2011a). Furthermore, the status of some recorded taxa was changed after 2011. An updated checklist of Thysanoptera from China (including Taiwan) is presented here with details based on the original references indicating the recent advances in the knowledge of the fauna of Thysanoptera in various parts of the country.

China (Fig. 1) is one of the world’s largest countries, with an area of 9.6 million square kilometres, which suggests a high level of biodiversity in these areas. China is constitutionally a unitary state divided into 22 provinces (Anhui, Fujian, Gansu, Guangdong, Guizhou, Hainan, Hebei, Heilongjiang, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Jilin, Liaoning, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Shandong, Sichuan, Shanxi, Yunnan, Zhejiang), five autonomous regions (Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Tibet or Xizang, Xinjiang), and four direct-administered municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, Tianjin)- collectively referred to as "mainland China"- as well as the special administrative region (SARs) of Hong Kong and Macau. The PRC regards the island of Taiwan as its Taiwan province, Kinmen and Matsu as a part of Fujian province and islands the ROC controls in the South China Sea as a part of Hainan province and Guangdong province, although all these territories are governed by the Republic of China (Anonymous, 2024a).

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The data compiled here are from all published records, including scientific literature, online databases, and published books. The review includes about 130 scientific papers on the thysanopteran fauna in China (including Taiwan), published from 2011 to July 2024. Genera are listed alphabetically within each family or subfamily, and species are similarly listed within each genus. The valid name of each species is presented according to the last taxonomic modification. Each species account includes its taxonomic name, references, and locality records within China based on the published literature. The subheading “Distribution” for each species refers only to localities within China (including Taiwan). Each taxonomic change, deleted/rejected/misidentification taxa, was also highlighted in separate notes. A plus (+) and an asterisk (*) indicate recorded taxa and new distribution in China after the last checklist by Mirab-balou et al. (2011a), respectively.

RESULTS

The current checklist includes 443 species of Terebrantia in 116 genera belonging to five families: Aeolothripidae, Melanthripidae, Merothripidae, Stenurothripidae and Thripidae; and 373 species in 90 genera of single family Phlaeothripidae in Tubulifera.

After the last checklist (Mirab-balou et al., 2011a), 110 species and 29 genera have been added to the fauna of China. In addition, the following taxa were deleted from the last checklist: Pezothrips frontalis (Uzel, 1895) (see Mirab-balou & Tong, 2012b), Frankliniella pallida (Uzel, 1895) (see Wang et al., 2019c), Frankliniella tritici (Fitch, 1855) (see Wang et al., 2019c) and Taeniothrips microglandus Han, 1990 (because of a mis-spelling of glanduculus, not a validly described species). DISCUSSION

China is one of 17 megadiverse countries lying in two of the world's major biogeographic realms: the Palaearctic and the Indomalayan (Zhen, 1960; Zhang, 1998). By one measure, China has over 34,687 species of animals and vascular plants, making it the third-most biodiverse country in the world after Brazil and Colombia (Anonymous, 2024b). In China, the resulting diversity of biomes, from the cold northern forests and grasslands to the rich tropical forests of the south and the extensively dissected topography of the southwest, supports a highly diverse flora and fauna. This diversity is clearly reflected in the Thysanoptera fauna, with a few endemics (Li et al., 2018c), but European taxa in the north (Mirab-balou et al., 2014d), Asian taxa in the south (Li et al. 2018b), and several from Australia reported from southern China. Fortunately, in the past 10 years, many additional taxa have been newly recorded or described for this country (Table 1). In total, according to the latest statistics of thrips species in China, which is 816 species, it includes about 12.6% of all species of thrips in the world.

Table 1. The number of taxa and their events in China (including Taiwan), 2011 to 2024.

Globally, the order Thysanoptera comprises 6,458 species in 788 genera, but the diversity in China shares ~12.6% of the global thrips diversity. In total, 816 species in 206 genera within two suborders, six families and six subfamilies. According to this updated checklist, the family Thripidae is the most diverse, with 412 species. Within this family, the richest genera are Thrips with 44 species, followed by Stenchaetothrips with 23 species, Mycterothrips with 18 species and Trichromothrips with 17 species. Regarding the Thrips genus, which has the most species in China, compared to the Japanese thrips fauna, only 39% of Japanese species have been reported in China (Masumoto & Okajima, 2019), but compared to Indian thrips fauna, about 56% of Indian species have been reported from this country (Tyagi et al., 2024). Considering that a part of China is located in the Palaearctic region, compared to a country like Iran, about 36% of the Thrips species in both countries are similar (Mirab-balou, 2018). The family Phlaeothripidae currently comprises more than 3,700 species worldwide and is the richest group in the order (ThripsWiki, 2023). In China, about 10% of this family has been recorded, showing a small number of the species. In this family, the richest genera are Liothrips, with 34 species, followed by Haplothrips, with 21 species and Bamboosiella, with 18 species. The family Aeolothripidae is represented by 24 species in six genera in China. This family includes facultative or obligatory predatory species, such as those in the genera Franklinothrips and Aeolothrips (Mound & Marullo, 1996). The most species have been recorded from Taiwan, with 292 records, followed by Yunnan, with 273 records, and Guangdong, with 237 records (Table 2).
